Hey everybody! I’m an acupuncturist, healer and spiritual guide, and I use subtle body work to really help empaths, healers, and highly sensitive people release the trauma trapped in their body without years of therapy. In this video we are talking about bad moods and what to do about them. I’m gonna walk through five keys that you can use to really shift a bad mood.
I recently had a question from one of our community members that asked “Leslie, what do you do to really get out of just a loud, bad mood?” I really like that she used the word loud. Sometimes it’s true, we are just in a funk, in a rut, whatever you call it, it kind of sucks. In this video we are going to give you several keys for actually getting out of a funk, getting out of a bad mood,
releasing it and changing your state in a way that does not suppress things, but actually enlivens and releases things from the inside out. Let’s dive in.
Now, what I don’t love sometimes about the Western self-help model, there’s certainly great things about therapy and I’m a fan as a base work aligned work for really getting to know your yourself. But what I don’t love about the self-help reality is just the “pull yourself up by your bootstraps and do it. Just decide to be happy!” If it were really that easy, the world would probably be a different place.
Suppression is not the way, this is my working hypothesis. So what can we do instead to actually work with the, my body system to shift our state into something different? Well, let’s talk about five different keys that you could use.
1. Use the Breath
Any sort of pranayama or yoga breathing, or even just taking some strong and long, deep breath will be helpful. One of my favorite prana exercises for shifting the mood and bringing in a lot of Qi is called bhastrika. It is a strong inhale through the nose as you reach your hands up, and as you exhale you pull your arms down to your sides and you blow the air out your nose. As if you’re trying to make a cotton ball move across the floor. Now little boogies can be present, so give yourself a little tissue nose blow clearing out before you do a couple rounds of this,
just a couple of rounds. I wouldn’t recommend you do more than three to five. And disclaimer, as with anything before you start any new exercise routines, please talk with your physician. This is for educational purposes only and should not be used to diagnose, treat, or cure any diseases. Just a little insight on how to use your body’s prana to help you. So just a few inhale exhales of bhastrika or strong inhale exhalation breathing can really do a lot to bring more prana and Qi into the system. Do not do this one so much that you get lightheaded and you should be sitting down just a couple of invigorating breasts. Like I said, start with three to five, see how you feel.
Using sound is a great way to move things. You can use external sound, playing an instrument, having a drum, using a bell and shaking things up, is very helpful. You can also use your own voice, do singing, singing in the shower, singing in your car. If you feel self-conscious about your voice or you feel like you’re not a singer, you can use toning which is the strong, long, continued syllable. You can just use the syllable “ah” or like an “a”. You would do a strong breath in and then you just make a long tone out,
Until you naturally run out of breath. After you make the sound, I recommend that you close your eyes and just kind of feel what effect that sound has had on the inside. This in itself is a deep practice, song and sound and toning in general, very helpful for uplifting a mood and actually physically releasing things from the body with the use of sound.
This is a great time for a dance break, put on a song, dance around, do some movement of any kind exercise running in place. I remember seeing a video on YouTube of Jack Lalane when he was well into his seventies or eighties, and he had a young interviewer and he was like, “Okay, come on, pump those arms, do those knees.” So sometimes in the morning when I’m trying to get my Qi up or I’m waiting for the water to boil, I’ll do a little sort of jogging in place and punching the ceiling. And I imagine that good old Jack Lalane(rest in peace) is there with me punching the ceiling harder, egging me on. So a little bit of getting your heart rate up is going to literally move your circulation and your Qi in a positive way that can affect the mind and uplift your mood.
4. Natural Environments
Just the other day, I was feeling like I was in a little bit of a funk, I was kind of down about certain things. Wasn’t feeling super enlivened and then we spent some time in the garden. We’re fortunate enough to live in a co-housing community that has a large organic garden. So we got to move in and pretty quickly had our own garden plot, which was great. So just spending that time in a natural environment, getting exposure to the earth vibes is great. You don’t have to be a gardener.
All you gotta do is take off your socks and have your feet bare feet on the ground. There are lots of research and resources around earthing or grounding. This is the practice of walking on and having your bare feet on the ground and really getting the vibration and the connection with the earth has a lot of actual research behind. It can be very helpful for changing your mood and your overall state of being.
The last one is water, not just as being around water in a natural environment, which is helpful, but water internally and externally. So internally pretty natural drinking some water, just staying hydrated. Sometimes we are more dehydrated than we actually notice and actually drinking water will help sort of enliven your biological system, which could be part of the lower mood. Then topically, so splashing your face with water, maybe even putting some water on the back of your neck, top of your head over your belly and your back in general. This will really give body a different signal and helps to form a bit of a reset.
So often in clinical practice between patients, after I’m washing my hands obviously for sanitary purposes. I’ll also sort of put water on my arms, back of my neck, on my belly and my back. Even if it’s a little cold, sometimes it wakes you up, but it also sort of gives your nervous system, a cleansing kind of a feeling. And you’ll notice, especially with the, the belly in the back, that you’ll sort of feel a little bit of a reset in that way.
Here again are the five different keys that you can use to help give more natural, key change into your body.
By Using the breath, movement, sound, the natural environment and water To shift without suppressing, or just trying to power through it in that way, which ultimately doesn’t really release anything. Aligning with the way that things are, can be helpful and help actually release things from the inside out
I hope you found this information helpful, and I hope it helps you change your mood. You are a soul with a body and you deserve great things.
