How to Stop Taking on Other People’s Energy | Empath’s guide

Introduction

As an empathic person, you may find that you absorb other people's emotions and energy easily, especially when you are around large groups of people or individuals who are experiencing intense emotions. While it's natural to feel empathy and compassion for others, it's also important to protect your own energy and well-being.

Understanding Energy Dynamics in Interpersonal Relationships

As a healer and spiritual guide, I help other healers, empaths, and highly sensitive people release trauma trapped in their body and become independent power sources of soul-aligned energy in the world by understanding the technical side of the mind-body system. This article is about a common topic from a more detailed angle: How to avoid taking on other people's energy!

There are various dimensions to this topic, but I want to focus on the natural phenomenon of energy dynamics - how energy works in interpersonal relationships. Just like how gold and silver particles mix at a microscopic level, we are also influenced by the energy of those around us. However, this does not mean that we are helpless victims of energy vampires. As embodied beings, we have the ability to repair, regenerate, and build up our energy field. In fact, I recommend implementing a pre, during, and post-routine to thrive even when other people are around, especially if you are an empath who tends to struggle in social situations.

Another problem with Empaths is that dealing with difficult people becomes more complicated for them than other people. Here, is a guide for empaths on " How to deal with difficult people."

Implementing a Pre, During, and Post-Routine

As empaths, we often struggle with taking on others' problems as their own and the energy of those around us, which can leave us feeling overwhelmed and drained. But the good news is that it is possible to keep our sensitivity superpowers without getting stuck with other people's stuff. In my subtle body certification training at the Body Wisdom Academy, we teach people how to release the trauma trapped in their bodies and become independent power sources of soul-aligned ways in the world. One key technique we teach is to create a pre, during, and post routine for being around other people.

Pre-Routine: Mindset Shifts and Clearing Unresolved Issues

In the pre-routine, it's important to keep an eye on the mind stories that we tell ourselves. Are we already predicting a negative outcome? Are we getting triggered by past experiences?

  • Shift your mindset: Use a simple mindset shift to set the tone for the situation. Say out loud, "I'm open to this being better than I thought possible." This helps you approach the situation with a positive mindset and openness to positive energy.

It's important to take a proactive approach to deal with triggers and past trauma before going into situations where you may be influenced by other people's energy. If you're already triggered by something from the past, it's likely that you'll bring that energy into the present situation and potentially make it worse. To avoid this, turn towards any unresolved issues and clean them up beforehand. This is something we work on extensively in the Body Wisdom Academy's Subtle Body Certification Training.

  • Use subtle body tools: Subtle bodywork can help you deal with any energy drains you may already be experiencing. Use these tools to clear any blockages and to help you enter the situation with a clearer mindset.

Another simple yet effective mindset shift that can help is to repeat the affirmation, "I'm open to this being better than I thought possible." This can be especially helpful when you're anticipating a difficult situation, such as dealing with customer service or government agencies. By setting a positive intention and remaining open to a better outcome, you may find that the situation turns out better than you initially expected.

During Routine: Staying Connected to Yourself

Check in with yourself throughout the day. Alternatively, you can set alarms to remind yourself to take a break and check in with your body.

  • Connect with your body: When you're in a situation with others, it's easy to become ungrounded. Connect with your body by focusing on your heart and pelvis to stay present in the moment.

When you notice that you're feeling disconnected, it's important to take space and reconnect with yourself. This can be done by taking a walk outside or finding a quiet space to practice some subtle body work. By doing this, you can bring yourself back to your own little empath bubble and use your tools to come back to a centered state.

  • Set energetic boundaries: It's important to set energetic boundaries to protect your energy. Visualize a protective shield around you or simply say "no" to anything that doesn't feel right.

When we find ourselves in difficult situations or around people who trigger us, it can be challenging to stay connected to ourselves and maintain our energy. However, there are practices we can incorporate before, during, and after these situations to help us stay centered and grounded.

Post-Routine: Resetting Your Energy with Water

  • Release any negative energy: After a situation where you may have encountered negative energy, take a moment to release it. This could be through meditation, journaling or any other activity that helps you release the negative energy.

After the event, it's important to reset our energy. A simple way to do this is to use water as a physical energy reset. Wash your hands, and then put some water up and down your arms, behind your neck, and over your belly and back.

  • Recharge your energy: Take time to recharge your energy after a draining situation. This could be through self-care activities like taking a bath, going for a walk or doing something you enjoy.

This can help clear out your system and reset your enteric nervous system. Using cooler water over the belly and back can have an especially strong effect. You can also use your intention during this time to give back any energy that's not yours and call back any of your energy that you've given away. Other grounding exercises, such as saging or putting your hands on the ground, can also be helpful for an energetic reset.

  • Reflect on the situation: Reflect on the situation to learn from it. What worked well for you? What could you improve on? Use this information to better prepare for future situations.

By incorporating these practices into our routine, we can improve our ability to stay centered and grounded in challenging situations. Remember to set an intention, stay connected to yourself during the event, and reset your energy afterward. With these tools, we can approach difficult situations with a greater sense of calm and resilience.

Meditation helps empaths on a larger scale. There are many benefits in the meditation journey for empaths. Read more about " Meditation for Empaths" and start your own journey.

Conclusion

Being an empathic person can be both a blessing and a curse. Empaths take on other people's problems as their own and that causes too much trouble for them. However, it is possible to maintain the benefits of your sensitivity without being overwhelmed by the emotions and energies of others. By utilizing tools such as checking in with yourself, getting distance, and practicing post-period resets, you can stay grounded and in control of your own energy. It's important to remember that you can be a healthy empathic person who is able to help others without sacrificing your own well-being.

You are an amazing soul with a beautiful body, and I wish you all the best on your journey towards greater emotional health and freedom!
